Management says an estimated 100 people disrupted classes, intimidated staff and caused damage to campus property. Students who took part in the protest will be suspended immediately pending formal hearings while non-students will be criminally charged.

Meanwhile, it's unclear if the academic programme will resume as normal at the University of KwaZulu-Natal's Howard College campus this morning. Yesterday, protesting students and workers met with university management to discuss a way forward after a two-week long protest over outsourcing.

The ANCYL branch secretary Sandile Ngcobo says although there was no outcome, he is pleased to see both workers and students uniting together.

"Even from the onset it's never been a protest where it's just workers alone or the students alone. It is a unified protests that says down with outsourcing in with in-sourcing and can we get back the services that we deserve as the paying students of this institution," he said.
