The 57-year-old had been on her way home with her daughter-in-law when the incident occurred yesterday morning.

Reaction Unit South Africa responded to the scene after being alerted by witnesses.

Spokesperson Prem Balram says the woman was a scrap metal collector.

"She had been returning from a scrap metal dealer in the Phoenix area. She had been crossing a railway line on the way to her home in an informal settlement near Stonebride Drive when the train ran her over," he said.

The woman tripped while allegedly crossing the railway line and could not get up in time.

Balram says authorities are investigating the exact cause of the incident.
