Durban taxi association undertakes own inspections

A local taxi association has been targeting driver compliance by carrying out its own inspections in Durban Central.

The South Beach Taxi Association says members from its road safety team, Hlokomela, have been stopping and checking taxi operators in Durban's Point area. 

 

The association's chairperson, Yusuf Khaliva, says they've also been checking their minibuses to ensure the vehicles are roadworthy.

“The taxi industry has its own way of road safety, so among the things that we do is to monitor our own vehicles and see how the drivers are behaving because there are a lot of drivers that drive under the influence of alcohol, and there are a lot of drivers who don't have their driver's licence. 

 

“So, what we do is we go to different places all the time and surprise drivers."
