Durban south community told to close windows, doors after 'toxic' Jacobs fire

Investigations have begun into the cause of a fire that gutted a factory in the south of Durban.

Flames engulfed the resin facility in Jacobs in the early hours of Wednesday morning.


There were no fatalities or injuries reported.

"The fire was contained yesterday [Wednesday] on the day of the incident," says regional commander at eThekwini Fire Sibusiso Mkhulisi.


"It took us plus-minus five to six hours to contain it. The site has been handed over to the owner. The area is safe." 


eThekwini Municipality has urged residents to be extra cautious and close windows and doors when necessary.

It says during operations to contain the raging blaze toxic smoke "emitted from the factory”.


"Areas affected include Wentworth and Merebank but due to a change in wind directions, areas such as Clairwood, Montclair, Bluff and Mobeni may also be affected," says eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela. 


"As a precautionary measure, residents are advised to close their windows and doors and to put wet cloths over ventilators until the smoke clears.

"Residents are further advised to refrain from outdoor activities from impacted areas."
