Transnet says the work aims to improve road infrastructure, boost safety, ease traffic flow, and increase operational efficiency.

Bayhead Road is a vital link within the port, providing access to terminals, warehouses, and industrial sites.

According to Transnet, about 13,000 vehicles use the route daily, nearly half of them are heavy trucks.

One of the neighbouring communities is the Bluff, with resident Ivor Aylward saying the upgrades are welcome and needed.

" If you look at Edwin Swales going towards up to Pinetown, how the road has deteriorated. It caved the road, you know, of these massive 22-ton trucks that are on the road."

However, he says there is concern that trucks could shift to Bluff roads during construction.

"My very big concern is where is metro? We are having very big concerns about trucking just on Edwin Swales itself. So, I say to our residents, I think we must actually take on metro and ask metro to have control of these trucks that is going come through our neighbourhood, What's happening when we come from work through Rossburgh, we get held up for two and a half hours sometimes. So, it's going be a very, very big concern to us all."

The works will also include milling the existing asphalt, laying new asphalt in both carriageways, repairing stormwater structures, installing road signs, and providing road markings.
