Durban man accused of murdering landlady abandons bail application

A Durban man accused of stabbing his elderly former landlady to death has abandoned his bid for bail.

Dhanwathie Fakira was killed in her Merebank home, south if the city in November.

37-year-old Jithin Ramjaewan claims he had gone to see the 79-year-old for marriage advice on the day.

Ramjaewan launched a formal application for bail earlier this month and the matter was, on the last occasion it was before the Durban Magistrate's Court, adjourned to today for evidence to continue.

But when he appeared in the dock, it emerged that he had had a change of heart and the court's now heard he no longer wants to apply for bail.

The case has been adjourned until March.

In the meantime, Ramjaewan has been remanded in custody at Westville Prison.

Meanwhile, a Chatsworth man accused of murdering his wife will be back in the dock in April.

65-year-old Jennifer Pillay was found dead in her bathtub on Christmas Eve. She had been strangled to death.

Her husband, 53-year-old Navin Chanderlal was released on R3,000 bail by the Chatsworth Magistrate's Court yesterday.
