Durban gets involved in global Women's March
Updated | By Portia Cele
Durban has become the latest city to host one of 673 worldwide marches to lend its voice to the global anti-Trump movement.
At least two million people in US cities participated in women-led mass protests. While, sister marches across the globe - including those hosted in local cities such as Durban and Cape Town - took place in solidarity with the Women's March on Washington.
President Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States at the Capitol Building, in Washington on Friday evening. While polls saw a 37% approval rating - the lowest on record.
Although advocating for women's rights, the movement also stands against the repeal of policies protecting the rights of immigrants and minorities under Trump's presidency.
Reacting to the protests, President Donald Trump took to Twitter saying, 'Why didn't these people vote?'
"Peaceful protests are a hallmark of our democracy. Even if I don't always agree, I recognize the rights of people to express their views," he tweeted.
A march took place in Cape Town’s Company’s Gardens while crowds gathered in the Durban CBD to march to the U.S. consulate.
