Bongani John Masombuka (37), Sfundo Harrison Nkosi (33), Khumbudzo Solomon Mukhuba (31), Brien Makhubedu (27), and Mashudu Malema (34) were sentenced in the High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Masilela was shot and killed in August 2017 in Tembisa during a hijacking.

Makhuba shot him as he tried to drive away when he saw them approaching his vehicle.

Masilela later died in hospital.

Before trying to hijack him, the five had already hijacked another vehicle in Daveyton and had kidnapped the owner and thrown him in the boot.

There were convicted for murder, kidnapping, possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, theft, robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted robbery, and pointing a firearm.

"The five were further sentenced to 175 years imprisonment collectively. The Judge ordered that the sentence run concurrently with the life sentence," said NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana

"In giving her Victim Impact Statement testimony, Sabatha Masilela, Dumisani’s mother, said the loss of her son affected her family to such an extent that she even lost her job as a teacher because she could not cope and she is now forced to take care of two Masilela’s siblings as a single parent.”
