Drought to severely affect food security: Minister
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The Minister of Agriculture says South Africa's food security will be heavily affected by the current drought.
Senzeni Zokwana, along with Rural Development Minister, Gugile Nkwinti, and several MECs addressed the media yesterday on the current drought situation in the country.
Zokwana says there is now a clear picture of the negative impact of the drought on crop production, livestock, agro-processing, and food production in all affected provinces.
He says they are doing what they can to mitigate the impact, especially for farmers who have collectively lost 5 000 animals.
"Government departments, municipalities and entities are working together to provide livestock feed, deliver rain water tanks, provide water to farmers and livestock owners. This is to help their livestock during the time of scarcity of grazing grass and water for hydration", he said.
