Dozens hurt in KZN crashes as Transport Month kicks off

Nine people have lost their lives in a carnage on KwaZulu-Natal’s roads this weekend as Transport Month has kicked off on a tragic note.

Nearly 90 people were hurt with various emergency medical services reporting at least 17 crashes in KZN on Saturday and yesterday.


The KZN Department of Transport says it’s shocking that so many lives have already been lost in just 48 hours.


Spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane says bringing down the number of weekend accidents and fatalities will be one of their focus areas as they put the spotlight on road safety throughout October.

"It is concerning that when we are beginning the transport month, there are so many deaths on the road already recorded. It has been a growing trend in the province that on weekends we experience fatal accidents and we are attending to the problem. 


"Beyond that, we appeal to motorists and everybody to come to the party and work with us in ensuring that we all reduce the scourge of fatalities on the road," he said. 


In one accident, two taxis collided on Brickfield Road, in Durban, where at least 20 people were injured including a pregnant woman.

While, three people were killed and four others seriously injured in an accident on the corner of Wiltshire Road and Hans Dettman Road on Saturday morning.

In another crash, on the N2 near Umgababa - a vehicle veered off the roadway and overturned - coming to rest at the bottom of an embankment. Five people who were in the vehicle were injured - with two sustaining serious injuries.
