Devastated Ixopo family 'puzzled' by blaze that killed 3 children
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
A devastated Ixopo family says they tried everything they could to rescue their three children, from a burning rondavel, but says the towering flames made it impossible to reach them.
Five-year-old Lwandile Mkhize, four-year-old Thandolwethu Sithole and three-year-old Mnqobi Mkhize tragically lost their lives last week.
They were playing in an old kitchen space when a fire broke out.
Family spokesperson Zilungisele Mkhize says they don't yet know what caused the blaze but it seems to have started near the doorway.
He says the children struggled to come out.
“We are so devastated as a family. We are still puzzled by the incident because we do not know how the fire started.
"When I arrived I saw that the children were trapped inside, unfortunately we were too late and couldn't do much to save them.
“This is by far the most tragic incident we experienced as a family.
