Updated | By Xolani Khumalo
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) says pensioners who had gone to collect their grants a post office in Ekuvukeni near Ladysmith have had to leave empty-handed because of an armed robbery.
A gang stole a large amount of money from the branch on Friday morning.
But police officers responded swiftly and exchanged fire with the robbers.
One of the suspects was shot and killed. Another five were arrested.
SASSA KZN spokesperson Sandy Godlwana explains how the robbery happened.
"This morning at around nine whilst officials were busy preparing for payments, these robbers moved into the premises and positioned themselves strategically inside the Post Office.
"The men then made off with an undisclosed amount of cash that was assigned for payments today."
"Police have arrested these men and a case of theft has been opened at the Ekuvukeni police station. We are comforted that no beneficiary or official was harmed during this ordeal."
