DA wants govt to impose India travel restrictions as infections soar
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
The Democratic Alliance (DA) is asking the government to impose travel restrictions on people coming to the country from India.

It says it's worried about a surge in Covid cases - as well as a new variant - detected there.
India's seen record jumps in infections and deaths in recent weeks.
Since the pandemic began, over 20-million people have been diagnosed with the virus - more than 226-thousand have died.
Over a dozen countries, including Australia, the US and the UK have imposed restrictions or total bans on travellers from India.

The DA's Angel Khanyile says South Africa should do the same.
"The DA calls on government to do the right thing and immediately impose travelling restrictions on travellers from India.
"This should include the halting of direct and connecting flights from India to South Africa as well as restrictions at seaports and land borders."
"Only repatriation flights should be allowed from India to transport South Africans back home.
"Repatriation should also be on the strict condition of a mandatory self-quarantine for two weeks or by producing a negative Covid-19 test that was taken after arrival in South Africa, not before leaving.
Meanwhile, South Africa's new daily Covid infections have increased by more than 2 000.
