DA urges govt to put SAA up for sale
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Democratic Alliance says the only way to save South African Airways is to put it into business rescue and then put it up for sale.
Yesterday, government announced it was giving the airline R3-billion to repay its Citibank loan.
Earlier this week, the finance minister refuted media reports that Treasury had approached the Public Investment Corporation for R10-billion in pension funds to bailout SAA.
Last month, DA Shadow Deputy Minister of Finance Alf Lees exposed government's then secret plan of an SAA bailout in Parliament.
Lees believes there's only one solution to the SAA problem.
"Sell it. Even if we sell it for R1 - take the liability away from the tax payer and ordinary South Africans. There's a huge demand for funding that will help South Africans rather than pay billions of rands into the South African blackhole," he says.
