DA threatens legal action over uMngeni matter
Updated | By Xolani Khumalo
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in uMngeni Municipality has threatened legal action, saying acting municipal manager Sandile Buthelezi has failed to ensure that an inaugural meeting is convened legally.
Last week, the party walked out of the first sitting when suspended Municipal Manager Thembeka Cibane allegedly wanted to chair the meeting.
The DA wrote a letter of demand to Buthelezi, saying he must make sure the council sits for the inaugural meeting and for him to preside over it.
"He has since responded to those letters saying basically he doesn't want to be the one to preside over this meeting. He says there are reasons for that," says Umngeni mayor-elect Christopher Pappas.
"He asked that Cogta appoints someone to preside over the meetings. So he was written to Cogta and we have seen that communication so he is waiting for a response from them.
"He also indicated to me, although I don't have it in writing, he indicated that the municipality today will be going to court to get an interdict against Cibane."
