DA slams James Mthethwa appointment

The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal is shocked at the appointment of the former Mayor of Umzinyathi James Mthethwa to the National Council of Provinces.

Mthethwa grabbed headlines earlier this year when he allegedly accused homosexuals of spreading HIV.

He denied this saying his comment was taken out of context.

Mthethwa stepped down as mayor shortly afterwards saying the ANC had other plans for him.

The DA's Mergan Chetty says redeploying corrupt officials is not a solution to the on-going crisis of poor governance at local government level.

''Those cases that are errant are not dismissed but rather redeployed to a different sphere of government as is the case with municipal managers who will run the municipalities to the ground, take them under maladministration and instead of being punished they are redeployed to other spheres while the residents pay the price,'' he said.

The municipality said after Mthethwa's comment that he apologised and retracted the statement.
