DA opposes proposed firearm law changes
Updated | By Celumusa Zulu
The DA says more consultations are needed on proposed
changes to firearm regulations.

It has called for the withdrawal of the proposals, warning they could leave homes, communities, and businesses more vulnerable to crime.
Government says they are aimed at tightening firearm controls and restricting the use of certain types of weapons.
The DA's Ian Cameron believes the changes could hamper armed response efforts, particularly in high-risk areas where private security is essential.

The party has launched a petition.
"That would disarm security guards and restrict non-lethal weapons. The vague rules on ammunition and firearm use create legal uncertainty while banning key equipment like rubber bullets and tasers.
“This jeopardises public and even officer safety. The DA calls for these amendments to be withdrawn and urges meaningful consultation to safeguard public security.”
Meanwhile the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority has rejected claims that the amendments will hinder operations by private security firms.
