DA KZN: Intervention needed to resolve overcrowding at Phoenix mortuary
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The DA in KwaZulu-Natal is asking health officials to intervene in the wake of what it's described as disturbing reports about apparent overcrowding at the Phoenix State Mortuary.
The party's health spokesperson Dr Rishigen Viranna says the facility's battling with a backlog of postmortem examinations.
Many of them have had to be put on hold because of constant interruptions to the water supply.

Viranna says the situation's become dire as the mortuary's already run out of storage space.
He's called on the department to carry out an investigation.

"The Department of Health can reprioritise its human resources from state mortuaries in other areas of the province and, for a short period, allow them to travel to Durban to work at the state mortuaries in Durban during this period to ensure that there is no backlog in autopsies that must occur according to the law."
