DA, IFP want Durban Mayor investigated
Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
The office of Durban Mayor, Zandile Gumede has responded to calls that she be investigated for allegedly abusing her power.
The mayor's spokesperson, Mthunzi Gumede says they know of the allegations.
"We note the statements that have been made by the opposition. At this stage, these are just political statements that have been made," he says.
The DA and the IFP say that Gumede broke the councillors code of conduct by allowing the ANC Youth League to hold meeting at City Hall's main auditorium - free of charge earlier this year.
The parties say the meeting was given the go ahead to counter anti-Zuma sentiment - following Durban's Zuma Must Fall March.
The DA and the IFP are planning on bringing the matter before the ethics committee.
Gumede has described the accusation as another political ploy.
"In the past, they have always made allegations and nothing has ever come before us so we think it's still part of politicking of the opposition," he says.
