During his address - Cyril Ramaphosa announced new, extensive measures aimed at supporting distressed families and communities - hard-hit by the coronavirus lockdown.

He says R50 billion has been allocated for grant packages. A special COVID-19 'Social Relief of Distress Grant' of 350-RAND-a month will be paid to individuals without an income - for the next six months.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it supports the rolling out of the interventions and the economic reforms he has committed to. It's also welcomed the re-opening of the economy.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says it's satisfied with the core aspects of the social relief package - but that it will wait for details on the additional economic measures that are set to be announced later this week.

Unemployed Durban resident - Nokhula Mabuza has welcomed the announcement of the Social Relief of Distress Grant and says the R350 will help fill the gap.

"We are struggling with unemployment and to get anything we need. With this R350, I believe it's going to help us. It's not much, but it's money that is issued out to assist us."

Njabulo Mtshali - who also doesn't have a job - says the amount won't cover essentials such as food.

"It's not enough at all. I am not happy with that R350. I don't know if I am going to apply for it, because it's not assisting and meeting the needs of a person."
