Cyber racism 'should be addressed appropriately'

The South African Jewish Board of Deputies says recent racial statements made on social media undermine the values of our Constitution.

This comes after former Scottburgh-based estate agent for Jawitz, Penny Sparrow posted racist comments on Facebook - referring to black people as monkeys.

Durban mobile gym owner, Justin van Vuuren and Standard Bank economist Chris Hart have also come under fire for their discriminatory posts.

The Board's National Director Wendy Kahn has commended those who've reported the matter to the SA Human Rights Commission.

"We do believe that these comments need to be dealt with and I think we are very privileged in this country to have a body such as the South African Human Rights Commission whose role is to try and to address these kinds of issues. I do think its important that they're raised in the appropriate forum," she said.

Property group Jawitz says it's taking against Sparrow for reputation damage as their logo still appeared on her profile despite having left the company in November.

Van Vuuren has lost some of his sponsors - including FutureLife, while Hart has been suspended by the major bank.
