COVID-19: Government's relaxed position on masks welcomed
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Some Durban residents have largely welcomed government’s new approach to face masks being worn by members of the public.
Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize, has encouraged us to wear homemade or cloth face masks when we leave our homes to help limit the spread of COVID-19.
He recommended the mask be made up of three layers of fabric. We should also avoid touching it and wash it frequently as a precaution.
Officials previously said there was no need for ordinary South Africans to wear masks and other protective gear to stop themselves from contracting the virus.
Umhlanga resident Maxwell Masuku is happy with the new recommendation.
"You never know. You might be at a queue at a store and someone sneezes or you end up touching some surface and touch your, therefore I believe this will help", he said.
Amanda Mtshali, a 19-year-old student from Durban North, is also pleased.
"I think it is a good idea because it will reduce chances of citizens getting the virus. It may not be entirely enough but I do think it will help", she said.
