Court hears man in N2 car crash case intends to plead guilty
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The Umbumbulu Magistrate's Court has heard a KZN man will plead guilty to charges of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving after his fiance and their unborn son were killed in a crash last year.
Devashen Naidoo had been driving with 22-year-old Sonali Sewbran to Southport, near Port Shepstone when they crashed into the back of a truck on the N2 near Umgababa.
Sewbran - who was 36 weeks pregnant at the time - died on impact.
The State prosecutor told the court that Naidoo had entered into a plea and sentencing agreement following the crash in January last year.
The 26-year-old appeared straight-faced before the magistrate this morning only looking down to sign the plea.
His and Sewbran's families sat behind him on opposite sides of the courtroom.
The prosecutor said the investigating officer will now take the terms of the plea and proposed sentence to Sewbran's family.
If they're happy with the contents of the plea, an affidavit will then be taken to a senior public prosecutor.
The case has been postponed to the 25th of April for the I/O to meet with Sewbran's family.
