Police say 19-year-old Tholinhlanhla Mathenjwa was stabbed by a classmate on Friday.

The 17-year-old schoolboy appeared in the Mtubatuba Magistrates' Court on Monday on a charge of murder. He remains in custody.

Spokesperson for the Education Department Muzi Mahlambi says the scourge of violence in the province's schools is cause for concern.

''As the department of education, we are very disturbed by this level of violence in our schools. We do intervene when such incidents occur by sending our officials to the affected school to do a trauma debriefing. Police are however currently handling the matter in Mtubatuba,'' he said.
