Cosatu reaffirms support for Ramaphosa
Updated | By Silindelo Masikane
Cosatu's General Secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali has reaffirmed the trade union federation's support for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to succeed President Jacob Zuma.
Hundreds of Cosatu affiliates marched to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in their provincial May Day rally on Sunday. Cosatu's main rally in Mangaung was cancelled after the crowd heckled President Zuma.
Cosatu delivered a memorandum of demands to the JSE, an institution it believes is at the centre of monopoly capital.
Workers in Gauteng were more receptive to tripartite alliance leaders, such as ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe.
Mantashe spoke of the need for unity among workers and the tripartite alliance.
"Unity is important for the alliance and the ANC. We are going through a very difficult period with strong factions that undermine the African National Congress," he said.
Mantashe also told workers that factionalism and corruption - combined - would result in "accidental leadership succession".
He refused to comment on the cancelation of the main rally in Bloemfontein.
"In Johannesburg, the May Day has been a success, warm, and the crowd was warm to all of us."
