KZN Education's Kwazi Mthethwa says they received reports from a number of schools that many pupils were left unsupervised during the strike.

"It means that they won't be paid for that particular day. While we respect the constitutional rights of any labour union to participate in a legal and protected strike - we take exception when learners are left unattended. That's why we have the policy of no work, no pay," he says.

Some protesting teachers - who joined around 4000 marchers in Durban

- told Newswatch yesterday that they feel they've been robbed of their norms and standards by the department.
