Nine officials from the Department of Correctional Services in Limpopo appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Tuesday on a charge of murder of an inmate.

The officials, attached to the Polokwane prison, were all granted bail of R1 500 each.
The matter was postponed to 21 August for a regional court date and further police investigations.
Limpopo police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba says the inmate, who was in custody, succumbed to his injuries in July 2024 after allegedly being assaulted by the officials.
"The matter was reported to the police, and at the time, a case of inquest was registered. During the course of the investigation and after autopsy results, the charge was changed to murder," says Ledwaba.
