The ruling could determine whether the local government elections can go ahead in August.

The IEC turned to the highest court in the land to have an electoral court decision on the voters' roll set aside.

Last year, the Electoral court ordered the IEC to register voter addresses or failing that, sufficient details after finding the Tlokwe by-elections were not free and fair because of an inadequate registry.

The court's decision will determine whether municipal elections take place on August 3 or whether the IEC will have to go back to fix its voter registry.

The court could also give the IEC some leeway in deciding how to fix the address verifications.

Whatever the outcome, it will be scrutinised closely by the political parties and independent candidates contesting the elections.
