Communities can help reduce crime: Phahlane
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
Acting National Commissioner Kgomotso Phahlane says crime is an element of society that cannot only be tackled by police alone.
He says all South Africans have a role to play in reducing crime.
He made the comment in Parliament earlier where the crime stats for the 2015/ 2016 financial year are being presented to the Portfolio Committee on Police.
Major General Norman Sekhukhune says crime stats will now be released on a quarterly and annual basis.
"Looking at the 17 community reported crimes, we observed that in the past financial year the total of 2.1 million charges were recorded by the South African Police Service. Of these, 1.7 million were community reported and 355 000 were those crimes detected as a result of police action.
"We observed that contact crimes have contributed 35.2% to the 17 community reported crimes. Property related crimes have contributed 30.7% to this basket," he said.
