Jane Govindasamy and her children, 22-year-old Denisha and 16-year-old Nikita were killed in their flat in September last year.
Judge Phillip Nkosi told Pillay that he doesn't know why he committed the crime.
He told Pillay that he killed people he had professed his love to, and who had trusted him.
The judge says Govindasamy and her daughters were innocent and Pillay was cruel and showed a total disregard for life.
He says he doesn’t know how he sleeps at night. The court heard Pillay was a danger to society.
Judge Nkosi says none of his personal circumstances far outweigh the crimes committed.
His sentences will run concurrently. He's also deemed unfit to possess a firearm.
On Thursday, while testifying in mitigation of sentence, Pillay was grilled by State Prosecutor, Cheryl Naidu.
He said he has four children with the youngest being a 12-year-old and that he was their sole caregiver until his arrest last year.
Pillay explained their mother died 15-years-ago.
He emphasised if he remains in prison, his children would end up on the street.
Naidu quizzed Pillay on his wife's death.
He said she took her own life and denied she died in mysterious circumstances.
Meanwhile Govindasamy's husband, Sagren broke down before his testimony in aggravation of sentence.
Govindasamy's husband, Sagren said he forgives his wife for having an affair.
"I don't know what kind of human being he is, if it was someone else, they would have broke down and in the end just admit it and say 'You know what? I did it and this was my reason. I am sorry.' But he just continued denying it," he told Newswatch.
