This morning, clashes broke out between protesting students and police - with a female having to be taken to hospital after getting shot by what's thought to have been a rubber bullet.

By mid-afternoon, groups of students had resumed throwing rocks at police - who retaliated with teargas and rubber bullets.

A fridge filled with beer bottles was also set alight at the entrance to the university.

The SAPS have confirmed that nine students were arrested at the campus, earlier today.

UKZN management had earlier suspended the academic programme for the day.
