Cholera death toll in Hammanskraal hits 17

Two more people have died from a cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal, bringing the number of people who've succumbed to the infectious disease there to 17.
"The number of patients that have been seen at the Jubilee District Hospital is sitting at 165 and this number includes 18 patients who have been transferred to other health facilities in Tshwane," says Gauteng Health's Motalatale Modiba.

"The number of laboratory-confirmed cases of cholera is standing at 29."
Modiba says 67 patients are currently admitted with a gastro-intestinal infection.
Healthcare personnel were placed on high alert this week, in response to the crisis in the community of Hammanskraal, north of Tshwane.

Cases were also reported in the Free State.
Meanwhile, Gauteng Health has urged people with symptoms like diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramps to go to their nearest clinic for treatment.
