China helps SA's power crisis with generation equipment
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says a deployment plan for emergency and small-scale electricity generation equipment is in the works.
Ntshavheni says the equipment, valued at R167 million, was donated by China.
She says the plan is to install it in public facilities.
"Cabinet expressed appreciation for a donation to South Africa by the People's Republic of China of emergency and small-scale generation equipment valued at R167 million.
"A deployment plan is being developed to ensure the donated equipment is installed in public facilities which will, as a result, be isolated from load shedding. A formal handover ceremony will take place as soon as the goods are cleared by South African customs authorities."

Ntshavheni has also welcomed a generation agreement with Mozambique to reduce load shedding.
The neighbouring country will make 100 megawatts immediately available to South Africa, while there are plans to procure more electricity in the coming months from the Karpowership plant to be located offshore Mozambique.
"The next three to 12 months will see South Africa importing up to 1 000 megawatts of electricity from Mozambique.
"Cabinet further welcomed continuous improvement in the Eskom's generation capacity that has ensured the utility registers over 60% Energy Availability Factor."
