Child killed in N2 pile-up in Durban

A child and a man have been killed in a horrific multi-vehicle pile-up on the N2, south of Durban.

Emergency responders were dispatched to the northbound side of the freeway, after five vehicles collided near cement factory NPC on Sunday afternoon.

 

According to medics, the passengers of two overturned cars were ejected onto the carriageway.

 

A spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, Garrith Jamieson, says advanced life support teams worked quickly to stabilise them.

 

"Approximately 10 patients had sustained serious to critical injuries. One child, believed to be six-years-old, had sustained critical injuries and was rushed through to hospital for the urgent care that he required.

"However, he went into a state of cardiac arrest and despite best efforts by doctors and paramedics, he passed away at hospital." 

 

"A male believed to be in his 50s had sustained major multiple injuries and went into a state of cardiac arrest on the scene. Paramedics worked to try and resuscitate the man; however, he passed away on the scene due to his injuries."

 

The cause of the crash is not known.
