Calm in Ennerdale, Eldorado Park
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The situation in the south of Johannesburg is calm amid a heavy police presence. Communities have vowed to continue their protests over housing and service delivery, with reports that today could see thousands of residents taking to the streets.
Residents of Fine Town, Ennerdale and Eldorado Park started protesting earlier this week for better infrastructure and housing.
Jacaranda FM News' Maryke Vermaak reports that people pelted cars with stones at the Grasmere Toll Plaza on Thursday night.
"The situation is calm this morning and the N1 is open for traffic, for now," she says.
Police say although the exact number of arrests are not clear, up to 60 people have been arrested for public violence.
Earlier this week the Minister of Housing Lindiwe Sisulu met with community leaders in Ennerdale, while Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Paul Mashatile will be heading to the area on Friday.
There is concern over learners not being able to go to school as a result of the protest while mid-year exams are underway.
"We saw parents forming a human chain around the school in Ennerdale to stop protesters from setting it alight," Vermaak says.
