Calls to lift sanctions against Zimbabwe, Sudan
Updated | By Newswatch
African leaders have called for sanctions against Zimbabwe and Sudan to be lifted unconditionally.
President Cyril Ramaphosa led a virtual meeting of the Heads of State and Government of South Africa's neighbouring countries today - in his capacity as chairperson of the African Union.
It was to discuss their experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the countries' response and identify areas where they can work together.
Ramaphosa says the sanctions are illegal.
"They are going to hamper those two countries' ability to be able to deal with COVID-19 and to save lives. This is not the time for sanctions to continue being imposed.
"They must be lifted immediately because we would like those sister countries to also have the ability to deal with this pandemic," says Ramaphosa.
