A community activist says the board and management need to answer to a serious case of patient neglect at the facility.

This after disturbing and shocking video footage went viral showing father, Sadek Ebrahim lying in bed -- his mouth teeming with live maggots.

Ebrahim, who has since passed away, was admitted two weeks ago for a leg amputation.

His son, who filmed the graphic video, says he had asked nurses to clean his father's mouth , but returned later to find that nothing had been done.

Former Chatsworth councillor and activist, Visvin Reddy says it is a case that highlights some of the serious challenges faced by an overburdened public health system.

"RK Khan is understaffed, under-resourced and in fairness to the hospital itself, the staff has - given these challenges - been trying their best," said Reddy.

"In this particular incident, whatever the case may be, nothing stops the staff from irrespective of their circumstances to provide some diligent care to the patients."

The Health Department's Ncumisa Mafunda says while they cannot divulge the patient's medical details, they can confirm that he had had a history of neglect and suffered from a number of serious ailments.
