Calls for Ramaphosa to tackle crime and unemployment at SONA 2022

Housing, crime and unemployment are some of the issues South Africans want President Cyril Ramaphosa to tackle when he delivers the 2022 State of the Nation Address on Thursday evening.

Members of Parliament will gather for the hybrid sitting at the Cape Town City Hall after a fire gutted parts of the National Assembly building last month.


Residents who live in Delft near the Cape Town International Airport have been speaking about their expectations ahead of tonight's speech.

Meanwhile Democratic Alliance leader, John Steenhuisen says they're anticipating a speech that speaks to education, safety and socioeconomic issues:


"We hope that he is going to announce the end of the State of Disaster. We would like to see some labour market reform to make is easier and more attractive for businesses to employ people. We would like to see the sale of all non-performing state-owned entities.


"The removal of all obstacles to competent metros being able to procure electricity directly from independent power producers and making sure that those responsible for state capture, corruption and stealing from the poor end up where they belong and that is in jail."
