Calls for educator overtime pay
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
Some teacher unions say their members should get incentives for overtime work, especially those giving extra classes to matrics.
The call comes as the Grade 12 final exams draw nearer.
NATU's spokesperson Alan Thompson says teachers are constantly under pressure to produce good results...and often go the extra mile to get matrics ready for their finals.
"They are trying their level best to ensure learners pass their exams because of a learner fails the integrity of the teacher is tainted. So that is why educators work extra hard and during their personal holiday time", he said.
SADTU's deputy secretary Bheki Shandu says the Education Department needs to have a budget for this - as it does with other programmes.
"The Education Department was quick to augment the winter classes budget by an additional R30 million. This year they are paying R80 million for these classes", he said.
"That tells us they are able to identify resources to drive some programs, Shandu said."
