Calls for dialogue on KZN race issue

Robust debate is needed to address increasing tensions between black people and those of Indian descent in KwaZulu-Natal, that is the view of local political analyst Imraan Buccus.

Buccus has been commenting on statements by Mazibuye African Forum's Phumlani Mfeka who recently wrote an sms to some Indian businessmen which some say is tantamount to hate speech.

Mfeka says many black people are not happy with the status quo in KZN saying they are exploited by their Indian employers.

''The African people are treated, not even second class, but third and fourth class citizens in the land of their forefathers,'' he said.

Following the sms, the KZN government sought an urgent interdict in the Pietermaritzburg High Court last week against what they say is hate speech and an incitement of violence.

MEC Ravi Pillay says they are dealing with the matter.

''This in no way seeks to suppress any legitimate debate on any issues. We are very firm that there's a certain line that cannot be crossed as far as threatening social cohesion is concerned,'' he said.

Political Analyst Buccus says poverty, racism and inequality have to be addressed.

''And quite clearly this is pointing to major fault lines in our society and well we might argue that Phumlani Mfeka and others don't represent mainstream thinking but I think they do raise really important points,'' he said.
