Call to halt relocation of NW Clover factory to Durban

The Chamber of Commerce in North West has appealed to government for assistance to halt Clover's plans to move its cheese factory to Durban.

It is asking the local government to draw up infrastructure plans to repair roads and sort out water supply problems.

The chamber's Andre Coertzen says if this happens, the dairy giant might rethink plans to relocate its biggest cheese-making plant from Lichtenburg to Queensburgh.

He says the group's been battling with water supply issues for more than six years.

He says Clover's relocation costs would be in the region of R1.5 billion.

More than 300 people also stand to lose their jobs.

"If you look at the relocation costs at Clover, it's R1.6 billion. That a lot of money and Lictenburg cannot afford to lose another business, because there is a big unemployment [rate] and if they lose that factory, there's 380 people. These guys that work earns a salary that looks after as many as ten people."
