Cabinet approves labour migration policy

Cabinet has approved a labour migration policy that will regulate employment of foreign nationals in South Africa.

Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni says the National Labour Migration Policy White Paper 2025 aims to achieve a balance in several areas.
It will include addressing expectations for job prospects.
During her post-Cabinet briefing on Thursday, Ntshavheni said the approval comes amid rising unemployment and the perceptions that foreign nationals are restricting labour market access for South Africans.
" The National Labor Migration Policy 2025 introduces quotas on the total number of documented foreign nationals with work visas that can be employed in major economic sectors such as agriculture, hospitality and tourism as well as construction.

“The policy compliments other interventions such as the enforcement of a list of sectors where foreign nationals cannot be allocated business visas, which limit foreign nationals establishing enterprises and trading in some sectors."
The announcement came on the same day as KZN police and Home Affairs officials raided a clothing factory in Shakaville in KwaDukuza after being tipped off that around 300 migrants, some believed to be undocumented, were employed at the factory.
The owner and manager of the facility were taken in for questioning.
