Neil Tovey's family says the former Bafana Bafana captain is expected to remain in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for some time.
The 54-year-old suffered a heart attack on Sunday, the second in almost two years.
Tovey, who captained South Africa to victory in the 1996 African Cup of Nations, has been serving as the South African Football Association's technical director.

His brother, Mark has been by his side since his admission to a local hospital.
"Thankfully he is progressing quite nicely every hour in a positive manner but there is still a long way to go. He is going to be here in ICU for another couple days but every hour is a good hour - thankfully," he said.
Tovey had been training on Sunday afternoon when he went into cardiac arrest. Last year, Tovey had also been hospitalised after suffering three consecutive heart attacks.
