‘Brake failure’ led to Tongaat bus crash: prelim report

A preliminary investigation into this Tuesday's fatal bus crash in Tongaat shows the vehicle’s brakes may have failed.

Three women were killed after the 30-seater plunged off the Tongaat River Bridge, landing on the river bed several meters below.
Emergency services worked to extricate 12 other occupants from the wreckage.
They used a rope and pulley system to hoist the injured back to the roadway.

KZN Department of Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says the victims are from Burbreeze.
"The bus plunged off the more than 50-meter bridge in Tongaat. The MEC has expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims. Equally, he has wished those who are injured a speedy recovery."
