Bloemfontein abuzz as Magashule appears in court

The Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court in the Free State is a hive of activity on Friday when African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Ace Magashule and his co-accused appears in court over the failed R255 million asbestos project.

A  large contingent of supporters of Magashule, including those rallying behind former Mangaung Metro Mayor Olly Mlamleli, are set to picket outside the court in support of these two and others. 

 

OFM News reports that a thousand people have apparently made their way to Bloemfontein from across the country. 

 

Magashule, who faces charges of corruption for failure to oversee the project will be joined in the dock by three more senior government officials who were nabbed by the Hawks on Thursday morning.

 

Those who will be in the dock includesco the CEO of Blackhead Consulting, Edwin Sodi, as well as the former Free State Human Settlements Head of Department, Nthimotse Mokhesi, and former National Director-General, Thabane Zulu, amongst other government officials.

 

They stand accused of looting funds that were earmarked to see the assessment, audit and removal of asbestos roofs in the province in 2014 when the housing tender was awarded. 

 

The suspects are out on bail ranging from R50 000 to R500 000.
