Municipal officials have told the Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance that at least R5 billion is needed to realise the city's electricity needs.

A further R2,3 billion is required for water services and repairs.

The DA's KZN spokesperson on Cooperative Governance, Chris Pappas says the situation at the City is very worrying.

"The DA is extremely concerned by the state of the Msunduzi Municipality and the budget required to turn this municipality around is enormous."

"We are especially concerned with the amount of free services being provided without the municipality claiming back from the equitable share facility at the national government. This is placing an increasing burden on ratepayers of the city and stretching the city's budget to its limit."
