The best of Comrades Marathon 2016

A new record, A KZN runner in third place and residents coming out in their numbers to support are some of the highlights of the 91st edition of the Comrades Marathon.
Accommodating about 20 000 runners, the down run began outside Pietermaritzburg's City Hall and ended at Durban's Kingsmead Stadium yesterday.
First time competitor, David Gatebe broke the Comrades Marathon record at a time of 5 hours, 18 minutes and 19 seconds.
The record was previously held by Russian Leonid Shvetsov ( at a time of 5 hours, 20 minutes and 41 seconds) in 2007.
Runner-up, Ludwick Mamabolo, and second runner-up, Bongmusa Mthembu, had previously walked away as champions of the race in 2012 and 2014 respectively.
While, defending champion Caroline Wostmann earned second place to Charne Bosman who finished at 6: 25: 55 with Sweden’s Kasja Berg coming in third place.
