Another KZN municipal official attacked
Co-operative Governance authorities say they are deeply concerned about the safety of government officials in KZN. It comes as yet another municipal official was attacked in southern KZN.
Speaker of the Umzimkhulu Local Municipality - Khayalethu Tobela was shot and wounded while at his Emfundweni home on Thursday evening. He currently is in hospital.
Cogta spokesperson, Lennox Mabaso says they are confident the police will bring the perpetrators to book.
"Cogta MEC in KZN, Nomusa Dube-Ncube has condemned the assassination attempt of the speaker of the Umzimkhulu Local Municipality. We understand that unknown assailants attacked the speaker and left him seriously wounded. We understand he is currently being attended to in a hospital. It's concerning that another public servant has been attacked," he said.
Umzimkhulu Mayor Mphuthumi Mpabanga says they have been left traumatized by the shooting. Mpabanga says they are still trying to figure out the motive.
"We are all shaken by is tragedy because we don't know what the cause of that is - and what will happen after that incident," he said.
