ANC pays tribute to ‘steady and loyal’ comrade David Mabuza

The African National Congress (ANC) has paid a heartfelt tribute to its former Deputy President, David Dabede Mabuza, describing him as a “dedicated servant of the people” and a “seasoned leader” whose life was defined by loyalty, discipline, and an unshakable commitment to the struggle for liberation.

Mabuza, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 64, was remembered by the ANC as a leader who embodied the movement’s values throughout his rise from grassroots activism to high office in both party and state.

"Comrade David Mabuza, affectionately known as ‘DD’ within society and our ranks, was a stalwart of the democratic struggle. He served the ANC with loyalty, dignity, and discipline, always anchored in the values of the organisation," said ANC National Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu.

Mabuza’s journey began in the trenches of student activism and saw him become a driving force in building ANC structures in Mpumalanga, where he later served as Premier from 2009 to 2018.

He was later elected Deputy President of the ANC in 2017, and subsequently served as Deputy President of the Republic until 2023.

Throughout his career, the ANC said Mabuza remained deeply connected to the people he served, with a personal warmth that resonated widely.

"He had a charming personality that connected with the people, reflective of the ANC’s rootedness in society," said Bhengu.

The ANC credited Mabuza with playing a pivotal role in strengthening internal unity and stability, both within the party and the broader government.

His tenure as Deputy President was marked by “a calm and steady hand,” and his ability to mediate tensions and foster reconciliation was particularly noted.

"Comrade Mabuza was deeply committed to reconciliation and nation-building, acting as a bridge-builder within both the movement and government."

The party says Mabuza’s life is emblematic of a generation of leaders who emerged from the liberation struggle and transitioned into democratic governance with a clear focus on building a better life for all South Africans.

The ANC has vowed to carry forward the values he represented.

"May his revolutionary spirit continue to guide us as we carry forward the struggle for a better life for all," Bhengu concluded.
