ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered his closing address on Sunday evening at the virtual meeting of the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) held this week end.

Ramaphosa reiterated the ANC’s support for the commission and urged all party members to cooperate with the commission, saying he believes the ANC must be given an opportunity to present its case at the commission.

It comes on the eve of former President Jacob Zuma summonsed to return to the Commission from Monday, 15 February, to complete his testimony.

A defiant Zuma has indicated that he will not be at the hearing today.

In his address, Ramaphosa said he will lead the ANC presentation at the Commission to ‘clarify’ matters pertaining to the organisation.

“As previously communicated, the ANC will have to present itself before the Commission to clarify matters pertaining to the organisation and indeed the evolution of the country’s political economy and the post-apartheid state. A number of officials have already been there, most notably the National Chairperson in his capacity as former Secretary-General and the Deputy Secretary-General,” says Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa also said the NEC has resolved matters that will see Secretary General Ace Magashule, having to possibly resign from his post.

He is facing charges in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court that relates to the controversial multi-million rand Free State asbestos housing audit project.

Ramaphosa says party’s top six also adopted Guidelines on implementing resolutions of the 54th Conference on members and leaders in conflict with the law or accused of serious misdemeanours.

“This is fundamental to the renewal of our movement and to strengthening the integrity and credibility of the ANC. The team will refine the document on the basis of the NEC’s inputs. We will also consult with provinces, and the NWC has been mandated to finalise the guidelines within the next month, so as to ensure immediate implementation.

“The implementation of these Guidelines forms a critical pillar of the organisation’s programme of renewal and unity of purpose. It should be emphasised that the starting point in realising the Conference’s resolutions on this matter is reliance on the revolutionary conscience of members and leaders."
